Devotees of sea chanteys and sea music will have a bonanza month in September.
Below are listed three events to cheer the heart of any sea chantey fan.
San Francisco's biggest maritime celebration-and a free one-returns to the Hyde Street Pier Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. As usual, the festival is packed with maritime events. On Saturday are scheduled a tugboat parade and rodeo, boat building, music, and storytelling crafts. Sunday's events include a tugboat race, a Coast Guard rescue, music, dance and sailboat rides. This year the emphasis is on San Francisco Bay's working small crafts, with many demonstrations. Call 415-561-6662, ext. 14 for more information.
The chantey sing will take place aboard the historic C.A. Thayer from 8:00 p.m. to midnight on the second Saturday, Sept. 12, instead of the usual first Saturday. Five former rangers who have led the popular chantey sing will gather and lead the first hour of a rousing evening of traditional working music. Everyone who likes sea songs is invited to join in.
Experience sailors' songs, ballads, chanteys, and folksongs of the sea with a wooden deck beneath your feet and towering masts overhead! San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park's annual traditional music Concert Series returns. Concerts will be held one Saturday monthly through November at 8:00 p.m. aboard the 1886 square-rigged sailing ship Balclutha, berthed at the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco.
Shay Black, internationally renowned folksinger, will perform on Saturday, September 19. Our own SFFMC members Holdstock and McLeod will follow on October 17, and the last concert in the series will be on November 14 with Tom Lewis.
Individual concert admission: $10 ($8 NMMA members). Advance tickets are strongly suggested: call 415-561-6662.
