The 4th Annual Berkeley Free Folk Festival is scheduled for Mothers' Day Weekend 1999, and we are accepting tape/CD submissions from prospective performers. As most folknik readers already know, this is a community event offering two full days of concerts, workshops and a children's program.
The 1999 Festival hopes to focus on traditional forms of music from diverse cultures, and anyone with programming ideas is encouraged to call. Mothers' Day activities will include performances by children and young adults on the main stage, and we encourage interested young musicians to apply (demo tapes not necessary for this if not available).
The Festival is free to the public and pays a small stipend to performers, who are also encouraged to bring tapes/CDs to sell. Booking is done in January. The Festival is also looking for someone to provide food for sale (barbecue with veggie dishes like last year would be great). As always, volunteers are needed in a variety of areas. The last in the fall Sea Music Concert series is Tom Lewis on Saturday, November 14 at 8:00 p.m. aboard the Balclutha at the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco. Born in Belfast, Lewis knows the sea from the bottom up, having spent 24 years in the Royal Navy before settling in British Columbia.
Lewis now travels around the world performing traditional chanteys as well as songs from his own seafaring experience, and carries audiences on an enthralling, often hilarious voyage...liberally sprinkled with salty stories. "Downtown Folk" is the name of a series of five concerts to be given at the Unitarian Universalist Church in San Jose during 1999. Each concert will feature two performers. The church seats 350.
