July 4 at Boulder Creek

From The Folknik May/June 1998

Last fall on Labor Day we went to Boulder Creek Scout Reservation and liked it so well we immediately reserved it for July 4 and Labor Day weekends this year!

Many of us love Portola, but we've also had lots of problems there-too many people, too many cars and the separation of the RVs from the rest of the campers. And the State Park system has had problems with the reservation system and has just recently resumed taking reservations.

Location

Our July 4 camp is near the town of Boulder Creek on Bear Creek Road. A confirmation and directions to the camp will be sent to you when you register. Please register early; the ranger would like to have an approximate count of the number of people attending before we arrive. Registration form is below.

Parking

Parking is in a central lot, not at the campsites. We may be allowed to park two or three vehicles at the campsites; first preference for these will be given to those with mobility problems. Please tell us either when you register, or when you arrive at the parking lot, if you have a special need.

We will have people to register campers and direct parking. There will be signs for the parking area. Please follow the directions of the people directing the parking .

We can allow only one or two vehicles at a time into the campgrounds to unload and load. Shuttles may be organized to help cut down on traffic; the road is narrow and the ranger does not want it to be congested. There are also handcarts at the camp for loading and unloading gear. Plan to pack light as possible.

New Activities: Potluck, Swimming

There will again be a community potluck at the outside dining area near the kitchen on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. A concert in the amphitheater will follow. You can bring your potluck food and store it in the refrigerator in the camp kitchen until the dinner. The kitchen has stoves we can use for heating food and is fully equipped with pots and pans.

Bring your own plates and silverware to the potluck dinner; paper plates and plastic eating utensils are suggested.

There is a large swimming hole in the creek. Also, we plan to hire a lifeguard and use the pool. Bring your swim suits!

Help Needed

Please plan to sign up for an hour for a duty: parking, registration, archery supervision, or camp cleanup, especially at the end of camp.

Caution-Quiet Hours

The camp has neighbors directly across Bear Creek, so any singing after 10:00 p.m.- the usual curfew for noise-near the creek will need to be quiet songs. We need to locate our singing circle or circles as far from the river if possible if we plan to sing later than that.
